After serving for two terms as Vice Chancellor for Cavendish University reknowned Educationist Prof John Mugisha has quit Cavendish University.
In a bittersweet moment for the academic community at Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), it was announced during the Academic Board meeting held on 11th June, 2024, that the esteemed Vice Chancellor, Prof. John F. Mugisha, was to depart following the successful completion of his second term in office.
“After eight (8) years of transformative leadership, Prof. Mugisha would embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, innovation, and unwavering commitment to higher education,” Management announced in a statement.
During his tenure, Prof. Mugisha was the driving force behind Cavendish University’s ascent to prominence as a centre of academic excellence in the region. His visionary leadership and steadfast dedication propelled the university to new heights, solidifying its reputation as a beacon of student-centred, technology-enabled, and transformative higher education.
Under Prof. Mugisha’s guidance, the university witnessed a remarkable expansion of its academic programmes catering to the diverse needs of students from all backgrounds.
His commitment to widening access to higher education has been particularly noteworthy, as he has championed the provision of scholarships to students from disadvantaged communities, ensuring that the transformative power of education reaches those who need it most.
Prof. Mugisha’s passion for academic research and innovation has been a hallmark of his tenure.
“He fostered a culture of intellectual curiosity and exploration, encouraging faculty and students alike to push the boundaries of knowledge and contribute to the advancement of their respective fields. His deep engagement with higher education stakeholders, such as the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Uganda Vice Chancellors’ Forum, Inter University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), and East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTCO), has further solidified Cavendish University’s position as a leader in the realm of higher education,” the interim, University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Olive Sabiiti, said
Currently Dr Olive Sabiiti has assumed the role of Vice Chancellor ensuring a seamless transition until a permanent successor is announced.
Dr. Sabiiti, a close collaborator of Prof. Mugisha, is poised to build upon the strong foundation laid by her predecessor and continue the university’s trajectory of excellence.
As Prof. Mugisha departs, the university community wishes him utmost success and extends its heartfelt gratitude for his exceptional leadership and resolute commitment to the institution’s growth and success.
His dedication to student empowerment, entrepreneurship, and ethical conduct has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals who have passed through the halls of Cavendish University, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and educators to come.
Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) is a leading Private University in Uganda established in 2008 and is licensed and accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

CUU large student population hail from over 47 countries and more than 10,000 students have graduated from CUU in many different disciplines at certificate, diploma, bachelor`s, and master`s levels since its inception including Ugandas music icon Joseph Mayanja aka Chameleon.
